Haikus for Kansas

WE GLEEFULLY NOTE that, prior to Bucknell's historic win over Kansas this past evening, certain Kansas basketball fans had made sport about Bucknell's chances through a nasty limerick contest.

Oops.

In that spirit of fun, we thought about writing limericks of our own. But perhaps limericks don't really do the trick. After all, when one wishes to convey snappy sentiment, is there any better form of poetry than the haiku? There is not. So, let us compose haikus in honor of Bucknell's victory:

Behold Kansas' shame:
They lost to a fourteenth seed --
on TV to boot!

Who the hell had heard
of tiny Bucknell, who tarred
and feathered Kansas?

For Bucknell triumphed --
thank God they recovered from
that stupid foul

Kansas is bleeding;
their efforts all went for nought.
Cry us a river.

Here's one really cool thing about this win, in personal terms. We had family go to Bucknell, so not only are they thrilled, the win insulates us from any and all charges of jumping on a bandwagon. However, we will fully take our lumps once our favorite team in the tourney -- that would be the Gonzaga Zags -- gets knocked out.

What a great posting and what a glorious day for Bucknell and Patriot League basketball. For tiny Bucknell to have knocked off the mighty Jayhawks, with its number 3 seed, number 10 national ranking and its possession of one of the great college basketball traditions is truly amazing. It was a once in a lifetime experience when I logged on to the main page of ESPN.com this morning and saw a picture of a Bucknell basketball player prominently featured in the center of the page and with Bucknell their lead story. Can Bucknell go further when they face Wisconsin at 4:40 PM EST Sunday? We shall see, but it's worth pointing out that Wisconsin is "just" a 6 seed compared to Kansas's number 3 seed. Let's hope the Bisons don't get over confident!

For what it's worth, I meant no evil intent in starting a Limerick contst, but rather I intended simply to have a little St. Patrick's Day fun.

We all took Bucknell for granted and they played a courageous game. I congratulate them and I hope that Bucknell Fans (and Patriot League fans for that matter) enjoy the win. It's a big win for the program.

KU will be fine. It's a tough loss, and an embarassing one, but last night at the team hotel, the players held their heads high and visited with the fans, shaking hands and smiling and signing autographs for the kids.

Congratulations Bucknell and feel free to add some post game victory Limericks - I would if I were you.

Hi Jeremy,

It's never any fun to go through a tough loss like Kansas did -- especially since, if I read your blog right, you were there for the game. That makes a loss really unpleasant.

But I admire your gracious sportsmanship following the game; I would have been wailing and gnashing my teeth if my team was in a similar spot. I know it's Really Not Fun when MSU or Ohio State manages to beat Michigan in football.

Then again, as a Michigan alum, I think I'd just be happy we were in the Big Dance! (That's why I'm rooting for Bucknell and Gonzaga -- the Wolverines haven't made it to the NCAA tourney in forever).

That said, I hate Bobby Knight.
